What is Surat Inawa?

Welcome to the Surat Inawa (수랕 이나와) blog!

I created Surat Inawa (수랕 이나와) because I wanted to design a writing script specifically tailored for our Austronesian languages here in the Philippines. The core foundation of this work is the brilliant, historical system developed by King Sejong the Great called Hunminjeongeum—or Sejonggeul, as I prefer to call it to give a much deeper honour (and because it is simpler for us to use).

If you look at our regional languages, you will notice they are highly phonetic. Because Sejonggeul (Hunminjeongeum) is inherently phonemic and phonetic, I realized it is an absolute match for us. Think about it: the actual sounds and syllable structures we make in speech are beautifully mirrored by the script itself, tracking exactly how our lips, mouth, and tongue physically shape each block. Because of this, I truly believe Sejonggeul (Hunminjeongeum) fits our country's 200+ indigenous languages and dialects perfectly:

  1. It captures and represents our local sounds far more accurately than the Latin alphabet we use everyday.

  2. It can be updated and expanded way more easily than the traditional Baybayin (ᜊᜌ᜔ᜊᜌᜒᜈ᜔) family.

  3. It is completely ready for modern handwriting and digital keyboards.

However, I want to make one thing very clear: Surat Inawa (수랕 이나와) is not Hangeul. Think of it this way: Hangeul is the modern Korean evolution of Sejonggeul (Hunminjeongeum), while Surat Inawa (수랕 이나와) is the modern, Austronesian Philippine adaptation. Just as Hangeul introduced its own unique shifts and mechanics over time, I have also adapted and implemented distinct rules in Surat Inawa (수랕 이나와) to suit our own local phonology. You could say that Hangeul and Surat Inawa (수랕 이나와) are siblings that share Sejonggeul (Hunminjeongeum) as their common parent.

In this blog, I am going to take you through the different facets of Surat Inawa (수랕 이나와). At the same time, we are going to learn how to write and type using the script together.
